Colac Visitor Information Centre history

The Colac Visitor Information Centre was officially opened in March 1987 through the vision and support of the Apex Club of Colac, who recognised the need for a dedicated facility to welcome and guide visitors to the district. Situated on the corner of Murray and Queen Street, the centre was established to highlight the region’s unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and community spirit. Since its beginnings, it has grown into an enduring part of Colac’s tourism landscape, offering not only information but also a gateway to the Otway Ranges, the Great Ocean Road, and the Western District. Over the decades, the centre has remained true to its founding purpose—serving as a proud ambassador for the Colac and Otway region. With strong community roots and a legacy of volunteer involvement, the Colac Visitor Information Centre continues to uphold its heritage while welcoming new generations of travellers.

Bob Day

Bob Day has generously donated a remarkable collection of images documenting the journey of the Centre — from the initial stages of building construction through to its official opening and inaugural ceremony. His contributions also include a range of news clippings and editorial articles, preserving the history and stories of this important community project. Bob, along with the dedicated Apex team, played an integral role in planning, designing, and bringing the space to life, ensuring it became a place the community could be proud of. Their vision and hard work laid the foundation for a centre that continues to serve and inspire visitors today. As a testament to their efforts, the Centre will celebrate its 40th birthday in 2027, marking four decades of community connection, growth, and shared memories.
